The inspiration for the ICD9-CM browser came from the RandomWalker Flex component developed by Eli Greenfield as posted on his blog Quietly Scheming. We felt this was a unique and intuitive way to transverse a hierarchical data structure.
The ICD9 codes came from the Center for Disease Control. Since the CDC provides the ICD9-CM codes in Rich Text Format (RTF), we used a parser provided by Simkus, LTD to extract the RTF file into a format that we could use for the browser.
